Community Clients
The Bronte youth and community centre community consultation
We have extensive experience within our team of completing a wide range of successful community schemes, both renovation and new build. We have a proven track record for sustainable community projects for third sector clients, start-up enterprises and not-for-profits.
Thinking beyond the boundaries of the immediate site, both socially and physically, is an integral part of our approach. The ‘ripple effect’ of well-thought-through small interventions brings about sustainable growth and development. We think strategically about the needs of the community over all generations, the availability of grant funding and community business support, as well as appropriate responses to the site.
Spatial design changes are considered alongside infrastructure eg. heating and power, providing longer-term sustainability rather than a sticking-plaster solution. Alongside this, we consider finishes and identity, often becoming involved in branding, the new design acting as a catalyst for organisational and spatial changes.
We are well-versed in community engagement and consultation. HSA have run design charrettes, pop-up cinemas, Forest Schools and numerous other events to discuss the aspirations of current and future users and stakeholders of a proposal.
Expertise Across Sectors
Extensive experience in delivering vibrant cultural spaces, youth centres, therapy and wellbeing buildings, community hubs, both with listed and heritage buildings.
Proven ability to create commercially viable environments that transform the culture of buildings, fostering lively communities and driving footfall.
In the current funding climate, we understand the importance of finding alternative revenue streams, and of having a robust business plan.
We actively look for ‘meanwhile’ projects and knowledge sharing to run alongside any main proposals, which often become projects in their own right, adding depth and widening the engagement and marketability of an organisation.
Specialist and Additional Commercial Services:
Early stage Analysis:
Assessing existing buildings or sites for renovation, expansion, or adaptive reuse.
Stakeholder engagement and public consultation:
We believe true consultation with stakeholders and communities produces better buildings, and we make events engaging, graphically accessible and energetic so we get to know who we are designing for. Co-production is embedded in our work.
Natural materials:
This choice of material impacts on the whole life carbon as well as crafting naturally healthy environments for users, that are breathable, low in VOCs and overall less harmful for the environment.
Sustainability and Energy Assessment:
Integrating sustainable design strategies and conducting energy performance studies.
Consultant Coordination:
Managing input from engineers, planners, and other specialists involved in the project.
Our integrated and sustainably led approach to community projects ensures that we deliver high-quality, exciting environments, even when working within restrictive budgets.

“Harrison Stringfellow have been so much more than our Architects over the last few years, their passion for social change and sustainability as well as their fight to get this project off the ground is something we will be forever grateful for!
They have helped us turn our vision into a reality, including connecting us with the right people to develop our business plan and helping us get the crucial youth investment funding ”

Engagement journey with social enterprise for a community sustainable retrofit of derelict building
“When the fabric of a building is co-created by the community and the architects, you know it’s a real sign of success, even before anyone has crossed the threshold.”
Angela Samata , Deputy Lieutenant of Merseyside
Growing Sudley CIC is a social enterprise that provides health and well-being through nature. HSA have been working with Growing Sudley for over 12 years, helping to establish the social enterprise and delivering pilot projects such as forest schools, holiday clubs and funded sessions for vulnerable adults.
From initial public consultations with residents and park users, projects were piloted to trial different activities in the garden, testing spatially and environmentally how they worked and helping to shape a more permanent brief for the long-term vision. This included how the garden would function, and how it would be maintained. We used a range of methods to engage the widest demographic to contribute to the co-design, explaining the constraints that come with limited funding and listed buildings and working out ways to overcome them together.
Phase 2 of the project has seen the conversion of a dilapidated Changing Rooms building into a low-carbon health and wellbeing therapy centre. Recognising the lack of regional construction skills in natural retrofit materials, we have worked in conjunction with Growing Sudley to learn and share knowledge, setting up a number of training initiatives where local community members could gain hands-on practical experience.
Following a successful pilot project in 2022, Growing Sudley was awarded National Lottery Heritage Funding to run hempcrete installation workshops, training 55 volunteers and inspiring one contractor to establish a new business. As part of the same grant, we collaborated with ceramic artist Laura Naylor and 197 community members to create over 500 tiles using foraged botanicals, now installed in the therapy rooms, strengthening the lasting connection and sense of ownership within the community.
